What Is PDRN and Why Does It Matter for Your Skin?

Posted by Camille Agaren on

If you’ve been exploring advanced skin treatments or professional skincare, you may have come across the ingredient PDRN — also known as Polynucleotides — particularly in the context of Korean skincare and professional clinic treatments. But what exactly is it, what does the science say, and why is it increasingly considered one of the most promising anti-ageing ingredients available today?

At Autumn Harmony, PDRN is a key active ingredient in our Bio Meso by GENOSYS treatment — delivered deep into the skin via the BIO-MESO™ spicule system. This post explores the science behind it — in plain English — drawing on a peer-reviewed paper published in the Chinese Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

What Is PDRN?

PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide — you may also see it called Polynucleotides (PN), which is the term more commonly used in the wider aesthetics world. Both refer to the same ingredient.

It is derived from salmon DNA, which shares approximately 95% similarity with human DNA — meaning the skin recognises it as familiar and responds to it exceptionally well. Rather than sitting on the surface of the skin, PDRN works at a cellular level, communicating with the skin’s own repair systems to trigger genuine, measurable change from within.[1]

What Can PDRN Actually Do for Your Skin?

This is where it gets interesting. PDRN doesn’t just target one concern — it addresses several of the most common reasons people seek professional skin treatment. Here’s what the research shows, translated into what it means for your skin.

Firmer, More Youthful-Looking Skin

One of the biggest drivers of visible ageing is the gradual loss of collagen — the protein that keeps skin firm, plump, and resilient. From our mid-twenties, collagen production slows, and the collagen we do have starts to break down more quickly.

PDRN works on both sides of this problem. It stimulates the skin cells responsible for producing collagen (fibroblasts), encouraging the skin to generate new collagen from within. At the same time, it helps to protect existing collagen from breaking down by suppressing the enzymes that degrade it. The result, over a course of treatments, is skin that feels firmer, looks more lifted, and has a more youthful quality to it.[1]

Calmer, Less Reactive Skin

You might not immediately connect inflammation with ageing — but chronic, low-grade inflammation (sometimes called “inflammaging”) is now recognised as one of the key drivers of skin ageing, as well as sensitivity, redness, and barrier disruption.

PDRN has a well-documented anti-inflammatory effect, helping to calm the skin at a cellular level by reducing the inflammatory signals that, over time, break down collagen, weaken the skin barrier, and make skin more reactive. If your skin tends to flush easily, feels tight or sensitive, or struggles to recover after treatments, this is particularly relevant.[1]

A Stronger, More Balanced Skin Barrier

The skin barrier is your skin’s first line of defence — it keeps moisture in and environmental aggressors out. When it’s compromised, skin feels dry, tight, and reactive, and is more prone to breakouts and sensitivity.

By reducing inflammation and supporting the skin’s natural repair processes, PDRN helps to restore and reinforce the skin barrier — improving the skin’s ability to retain hydration and maintain balance. Skin that was once unpredictable or hard to manage often becomes more settled and resilient over a course of PDRN treatments.[1]

Brighter, More Even Skin Tone

Dark spots, post-breakout marks, and uneven skin tone are among the most common concerns I hear from clients. PDRN has been shown to help by reducing melanin production — the process that causes pigmentation to form in the first place. This makes it a genuinely useful ingredient for anyone dealing with hyperpigmentation, sun damage, or the kind of dullness that makes skin look tired rather than radiant.[1]

Faster Recovery and Better Skin Repair

PDRN has a well-established role in tissue repair and wound healing — it improves microcirculation (the flow of blood through the tiny vessels in the skin), bringing more oxygen and nutrients to skin cells and supporting faster, more effective recovery. This is one of the reasons PDRN works so well when delivered via professional treatments: the skin is primed to repair, and PDRN actively accelerates that process.[1]

Skin That Responds Better Over Time

Perhaps the most compelling thing about PDRN is that its benefits are cumulative. Each treatment builds on the last — collagen levels improve, inflammation reduces, the barrier strengthens, and the skin becomes progressively more resilient, balanced, and healthy-looking. Clients often describe their skin as feeling “different” after a course — not just better-looking, but genuinely healthier in how it behaves day to day.

Is PDRN Safe?

Yes — PDRN has an excellent safety record. Multiple clinical studies across a wide range of patient groups report no serious adverse effects. Its high biocompatibility (thanks to that 95% similarity to human DNA) means it is very well tolerated, even by sensitive skin types.[1]

What the Research Concludes

The peer-reviewed paper this post draws on concludes that PDRN “can positively influence skin quality, slow skin ageing and improve regional microcirculation, reduce inflammation and is recommended for use in skincare.” The authors describe it as a promising and safe skin anti-ageing agent — one with a genuinely broad range of clinically supported benefits.[1]

How PDRN Is Delivered at Autumn Harmony

Applying PDRN topically has limited effect — the molecule needs to reach the deeper layers of the skin to do its work. At Autumn Harmony, PDRN is delivered at a professional concentration of 60,000ppm via the GENOSYS Bio-Meso PDRN Expert Ampoule 60000, as part of the Bio Meso Spicule Facial.

The BIO-MESO™ spicule system uses millions of microscopic natural spicules to create microchannels in the skin, driving PDRN — along with 5 ceramides, 8 anti-ageing peptides, and 9 growth factor peptides — deep into the skin where it can have the greatest impact. It is a needle-free treatment with minimal downtime, suitable for most skin types.

The treatment is available at the clinic in Ashford, Surrey and as a Mobile Treatment at your home.
