What Waxing Is

Waxing is a professional hair removal method that removes hair from the root, leaving the skin smooth, soft, and refreshed. Unlike shaving, which cuts hair at the surface, waxing removes hair from the root — resulting in longer-lasting smoothness and, over time, finer and sparser regrowth with regular appointments.

Important: Skincare Actives & Waxing

One of the most common — and increasingly relevant — contraindications to waxing is the use of active ingredients in skincare. With more clients now incorporating acids, retinols, and exfoliating products into both their facial and body routines, it is essential to be aware of how these ingredients can affect the skin's response to waxing.

Active ingredients such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, AHAs, BHAs, retinol, and retinoids work by accelerating cell turnover and thinning the outer layers of the skin. When waxing is performed on skin that has been sensitised by these ingredients, there is a significantly increased risk of:

  • Heightened sensitivity and discomfort during treatment
  • Skin lifting or removal — where the top layer of skin is removed along with the wax, causing rawness, grazing, or open skin
  • Post-waxing redness, irritation, or inflammation that is more severe than usual

As a general guideline, please stop using the following before your waxing appointment:

  • Retinol / retinoids – stop at least 5–7 days before facial waxing; 3–5 days before body waxing
  • Glycolic acid, lactic acid, AHAs & BHAs – stop at least 3–5 days before the area to be waxed
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in high concentrations – stop at least 2–3 days before facial waxing
  • Exfoliating scrubs or peels – avoid in the week before your appointment

If you are unsure whether your current skincare routine may affect your treatment, please mention this during your consultation.

How the Treatment Is Performed

  1. Consultation – Discuss the areas you wish to treat, your hair type, sensitivities, and preferred wax type.
  2. Preparation – Cleanse and protect the skin, ensuring comfort and hygiene.
  3. Wax Application – Warm wax is applied in the direction of hair growth and removed carefully for smooth results.
  4. Aftercare – Soothe the skin and provide guidance for maintaining smooth results and minimising irritation.

Treatment durations vary depending on the area and type of waxing, typically 15–60 minutes.

Understanding Hair Growth & Why Multiple Sessions May Be Needed

  • Some hairs may not be ready to remove during the first session
  • Up to 3 sessions may be required to achieve maximum smoothness and long-lasting results
  • Consistent waxing ensures the best overall outcome

Patch Testing Requirement

Patch testing may be required for facial waxing, 24–48 hours prior to treatment, depending on skin sensitivity.

FAQs About Waxing

How long does waxing last?

Results typically last 3–6 weeks, depending on your individual hair growth cycle and the area treated.

What is the difference between hot wax and strip wax?

Hot wax is applied thickly and removed without a strip — it is gentler on the skin and ideal for sensitive or intimate areas. Strip wax is applied thinly and removed with a cloth strip, making it efficient for larger body areas such as legs and arms.

How long does hair need to be before waxing?

Hair should ideally be at least 5–6mm long (roughly 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving) to allow the wax to grip effectively.

Is waxing painful?

Some discomfort is normal, particularly for first-time clients or in more sensitive areas. Discomfort typically reduces with regular appointments as hair becomes finer.

Can I be waxed if I have sensitive skin?

Yes — sensitive skin is assessed during your consultation and the most appropriate wax type and technique will be selected.

I use glycolic acid or retinol — can I still be waxed?

Yes, but you will need to pause these products for an appropriate period before your appointment — see the Skincare Actives & Waxing section above for specific guidance.

What should I avoid after waxing?

For 24–48 hours after waxing, avoid heat (saunas, hot baths, sunbeds), tight clothing over waxed areas, swimming pools, and applying perfumed products to the skin. SPF is recommended if the waxed area will be exposed to sun — freshly waxed skin is more sensitive to UV damage.

How often should I book waxing appointments?

Every 3–6 weeks is recommended to maintain smooth results and catch hairs at the optimal growth stage.

Can I have waxing at home?

Yes — waxing is available as a mobile treatment across Ashford, Surrey and London, including evenings and weekends. I bring all equipment needed directly to you. Find out more about mobile waxing →

Protect Your Skin After Waxing

Freshly waxed skin is more sensitive to UV exposure. Applying SPF is an important step in your post-waxing aftercare, particularly for facial waxing or any areas exposed to sunlight:
